Cockroaches-The Everlasting Pest

No one wants them and yet they've persisted for more than 350 million years despite attempts to get rid of them. Without control, one pair of German roaches can multiply to more than 1 million in less than a year. Roaches are found everywhere. They like nearly any area humans like-especially where food, moisture and warmth is abundant. Cockroaches prefer darkness and crawl into amazingly small crevices as tiny as the thickness of a dime! An adult cockroach can live for a month without food as long as water or moisture is present.

Roaches carry and spread diseases. It's not unusual for bacteriologists to find salmonella bacteria (which causes food poisoning in humans) on the bodies of cockroaches. Additionally, cockroaches are believed to spread viruses and they are the number two reason allergic reactions for many people, especially asthmatic children.

What can you do before the Lindsey Professional arrives? The most important thing you can do to help the pest control professional is to clean, sanitation can help eliminate food, and harborage. Harborage is the living space that roaches live and breed in. The more harborage space you eliminate the more you stress the cockroach population. Some areas where roaches love to live are stored bags, in cardboard boxes (inside the paper itself), under sinks, refrigerators, and washers. Even a few crumbs that slip down beside a stove, for example, can serve as a gourmet dinner for several cockroaches for some time.

At Lindsey Pest Control we use an integrated approach which includes baits placed behind equipment in and out of the way places. These baits are gourmet meals for roaches. They eat them and then take them back into the walls to serve other roaches. The old method of spraying for roaches was effective for a while. But the roach population will never be really eliminated. With a bait and spray program we at Lindsey Pest Control can control roaches in and around your facility.

Types or roaches we find in and around Jacksonville

This is a German cockroach (Blattella germanica) found in homes restaurants, warehouses, factories, and anywhere else that man lives eats or works. They are about ¾ of an inch long and are capable of tremendous populations. They like warm dark places like cracks in walls, stoves, under refrigerators, in bathrooms. With modern techniques they can be controlled with scheduled services.

This is an American cockroach (Periplaneta americana) it is the largest cockroach we have in Jacksonville. It can grow to about 1-½ inches. It takes nearly one year to become an adult American roach. They live mostly outside in trees, bushes, palms, woodpiles, and any ground cover that is available. They enter the house to find food at night and wander around. To successfully protect your property form American roaches a regular scheduled maintenance program should be done inside and out.

This is an Asian Cockroach. It looks exactly like a German cockroach. They are different in two important ways. First, Asian cockroaches fly; German cockroaches do not. Second they live outside in leaf litter, mulch and other debris. They are now in Jacksonville and you may see them at night. They like to fly to lighted areas at night. When they are in the area there will be hundreds of them from time to time they have two time per year where the population seems to peek, late spring and early fall. Control involves several techniques.
