What Do Fire Ant Nests Look Like?

Fire ant mounds are large, between two and four square feet, and have an oblong, irregular shape. The entrances and exits are located on the sides of the mounds, not on the top. Fire ants build their nests in open, sunny areas and avoid constructing them in wooded areas or areas with a lot of shade.

What Attracts Fire Ants?

These ants are attracted to warm, humid environments, making Jacksonville the perfect home and large open outdoor spaces such as yards, parks, and fields. They are also attracted to properties that offer them easy access to food sources. Fire ants are omnivores, meaning that they feed on a wide variety of plants and animals, including earthworms, spiders, small mammals such as birds and rodents, and any fruits or vegetables that they happen across.

Are Fire Ants Dangerous?

Yes, fire ants are a hazardous species of ants to have nesting on your property. Fire ants aggressively protect themselves and their nests from detected threats, including people and animals. Fire ants attack in large numbers when they feel threatened, repeatedly stinging and injecting venom into their victims. Being attacked by fire ants is not only extremely painful, but it is extremely dangerous as well. Their venom can trigger anaphylaxis which can be life-threatening and requires immediate medical attention. Coming into contact with fire ants or fire ant nests should be avoided at all costs.

If you choose one of our home pest control plans, we'll perform ongoing maintenance to ensure the colonies don't restart and once again become a danger for you, your family, and your pets.
