The Safe Way To Get Rid Of Dangerous Spiders In Jacksonville

August 30, 2022

You should know three dangerous spiders: the brown recluse, black widow, and yellow sac spider. Most Florida spiders are safe enough to be around, no matter how frightening they may appear to be, because they don’t produce powerful enough venom to do much damage. Those three, however, have much more potent venom.

How To Identify Dangerous Spiders

Can you tell a dangerous spider from one that is not? All spiders have fangs, but not all spiders have the ability to bite humans. All spiders, except those in the Ulobridae family, have venom. And yet, there are only three spiders you should consider a threat: the brown recluse, black widow, and yellow sac spider.

  1. The brown recluse: The brown recluse is a spider that lives up to its namesake. It is a small tan and brown spider that hides in dark corners. This arachnid is nocturnal and is drawn to cluttered areas with quick access to an exit. The brown recluse has a unique violin-shaped silhouette.
  2. The black widow: The female black widow is one of the most recognizable spiders in North America. She is shiny black and has a red hourglass on the underside of her abdomen. Male black widows have a brown body and black legs.
  3. The yellow sac spider: The yellow sac spider is a light amber color and sometimes gets confused for a brown recluse, but it does not have the same violin shape.

These are the most venomous spiders in Florida, and there are plenty of other spiders that can bite. Most spider bites can cause mild soreness, blistering, nausea, and a headache. The severity of your reaction depends on your immune system and the spider that bites you.

The Side Effects Of Being Bitten By A Dangerous Spider

Chances are, you might not see the spider that bites you. However, you can probably deduce a spider bite over another insect bite. Spider bites are likely to blister and cause mild pain. Below is a list of the side effects of being bitten by a dangerous spider.

  • Blistering
  • Red bullseye
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Chills, body aches
  • Headache
  • Intense pain at the site of the bite

Spider bites can be moderately painful, and depending on your immune response, you may feel ill for a couple of days. Out of the bites reported, not many people feel the bite occurred by the brown recluse or the black widow. However, the yellow sac spider is said to have a painfully strong bite.

How To Safely Get Rid Of Dangerous Spiders On Your Property

The best way to get rid of spiders on your property is to make it uncomfortable for them to stay. Try these tips to help keep them away:

  • Clip overgrown vegetation away from your house.
  • Stack firewood away from your home, off the ground in a dry area.
  • Replace broken mesh screens and weatherstripping.
  • Tidy food prep areas, throw away garbage, and wipe spills.
  • Remove standing water in your yard.

Most house spiders can be easily vacuumed up, crushed, or captured and moved outside. Spiders are attracted to places that don't have too much human activity. Storage rooms, basements, sheds, and the garage are places you'll most likely run into one of the three most venomous spiders in Florida.
