Mosquitoes are nothing new in Jacksonville, but a recent health alert gives Duval County residents an extra reason to pay attention to mosquito activity around their homes.
On September 15, 2026, the Florida Department of Health in Duval County issued a mosquito-borne illness alert after a second locally acquired case of West Nile virus was confirmed in the county.
That doesn't mean every mosquito is carrying West Nile virus or that Jacksonville residents need to avoid spending time outside. It does mean this is a good time to be more intentional about preventing mosquito bites and reducing breeding sites around your property.
Why Did Duval County Issue a Mosquito-Borne Illness Alert?
According to the Florida Department of Health in Duval County, the September alert followed the confirmation of a second locally acquired West Nile virus case.
West Nile virus is transmitted to people through the bite of an infected mosquito. It does not spread from person to person through ordinary contact.
Many people infected with the West Nile virus never develop symptoms. For those who do, the Florida Department of Health lists possible symptoms such as fever, headache, body aches, weakness, rash, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Less common symptoms can include neck stiffness, altered mental status, and disorientation.
DOH-Duval and Jacksonville Mosquito Control are also coordinating mosquito surveillance and prevention efforts, including ground spraying.
For homeowners, the takeaway is fairly simple: there's no reason to panic, but there is a good reason to take mosquito prevention seriously right now.
How Residents Can Help Prevent Mosquito Bites
DOH-Duval recommends taking precautions to prevent mosquito bites, including removing standing water where mosquitoes can reproduce, using an appropriate mosquito repellent, covering exposed skin when practical, and keeping window and door screens in good repair.
Around your property, pay particular attention to containers and other items that can hold rainwater or irrigation water, since some mosquitoes can develop in very small amounts of standing water.
